Learn how to write music for TV and film
First and foremost, I want to give tremendous thanks for my publishers, producers and directors, who belived in me to give me the opportunity to create music for their TV shows and movies! What a dream come true! Thank you!
I remember when I first decided to give this "sync license thing" a shot! LOL. I was so skeptical that this was an actual music career path. Little did I know at the time, that this would be one of the most reward adventrues that I had ever begun.
Once I decided to start writing music to get sync placements, reality quickly sunk in after reading a few articles that basically stated, I would need to start creating tracks from first note to mastering in 1 - 3 day! And it would be best to create albums!
At this point in my career, I had created one album which took months! I was panicking and I studying everything I could to try and figure out how to write music that quickly! A few tips helped, but I could not find the answers I needed to really break to the next level.
I realized that I needed to have a good system in place that is easy to repeat over and over.
Flash forward, I'm able to crank out tracks in 1 day if needed and I have. One of these tracks was even placed in a docuseries called "Strong Female Lead," which aired internationally. The time frame to turn in a track was so short (1 day), that I almost didn't even try! Imagine if I had made that choice! I would have missed out, big time!
Make the choice to rise to the next level with your music career with a music writing strategy!
"Your path to becoming a successful composer is not the same as someone else’s path! What could be similar is your training, dedication, and commitment The choice is yours"
- Luke Truan
When I started composing, I spent countless hours on the internet and YouTube searching for many different things related to being a composer for film, TV, games, and media. I even looked into going to college to study music, but it was too expensive and not in the cards, but I needed a way to learn how to compose to picture, composer to a written description (a brief), compose quality music for TV quickly, and just finish more music. Early on in my career, I had trouble finishing a track! If you can you relate, keep reading!
After learning from others in the industry, I realized in order to compete in the music industry, specifically production music, I would need to be able to compose and produce music in 1-3 days total time! Yes, that's right, from planning to mastering in 1 -3 days! Often, I would need to be able to compose and produce a track in just one day!
Even though I had taken classes and courses on how to compose to picture, studied countless YouTube videos, and even paid for some private lessons, I still wasn't breaking through to that next level of composing and production speed. Until one day, I realized I had the answers already in front of me, I just needed to put them together in a more structured way. It turns out that I was using 4 Steps to compose and finish high-quality music, but I wasn't doing it consistently.
Once I wrote the 4 steps down, I began to test the process on briefs and film projects. After practicing the steps, a lot, I was doing it! I was getting closer and closer to composing and producing 2 to 2 min and 30 seconds of music in 1-3 days. After some time, I reached my goal and was able to compose and produce a track in 1-3 days and even in 1 day at times!
Thanks to this structured approach, I was more confident in my ability to compete in the music industry. The biggest test was receiving a brief for a TV show and in one day creating a piece of music that would then get placed in an international documentary series! Here's a secret, I almost didn't attempt to compose and produce music for the brief!
Good thing I tried! You never know! If I can do it you can do until you try!

And it's worth it! Being able to take command of your music career and business is priceless. If you are in business to create music for sync, you need to get as much music out there as you can every week and into the hands of publishers who can get it placed!
If you were to enroll in a collage, course, you'd find that even an online certification course, could cost around $10,000 and you may not even get a lot of one-on-one time with the teacher!
As a composer, let's face it money is tight! It's hard to justify spending $3,500 upfront before your first placement royalty. Especially when there are so many awesome virtual instruments that we must have! LOL. Most composers have a day job, that's how I started. And that's ok! Don't feel ashamed of that for one second. To move your music career and business forward, its necessary to invest time and money to gain the knowledge and then apply that knowledge through practice!
So, I took the time to put what I have learned related to finishing music into an eBook to be able to keep the cost lower and give you the opportunity to learn what I do everyday when writing music for film, TV and advertising. I learned the skills need to move my writing skills, creativity, organization, workflow and mindset forward and now I'm sharing the knowledge with you!
